Never too Young to make good music

Check out this little guy old playing the drum set.

Even when he makes a mistake, he has practiced enough

to pick up, catch up and start again- and still have fun playing.

PERFECT PERCUSSION!

This is a drum corp from Switzerland who performed

for the first time at the Military Tatoo in Edinburgh,

Scotland for the Royal Highland Games. They were a hit!

HOW TO HOLD YOUR DRUMSTICKS

It may not seem like a big thing, but holding the drum sticks correctly is the FIRST thing you need to master to become a good percussionist.

This video explains exactly how that isdone.  Practice this often and when it is natural, begin to play

LRLR  LRLR  LRLR LRLR

and

RLRL RLRL RLRL RLRL

then

RRLL RRLL RRLL RRLL

and

LLRR LLRR LLRR LLRR

over and over again until you can do it almost without effort, while correctly holding your sticks.  ( If you are holding your sticks properly, they will look like a piece of pie when both are held gently resting on the drum head.)

DJEMBE

The Djembe is an African drum

that is played with bare hands.

The name means "everyone gather together", which is the traditional purpose for this drum. The name comes from the Sycamore fig tree, from which is what the body of the drum is made.

This video shows the six basic sounds

that can be made when the drum is

used in its traditional setting.

PERCUSSION RUDIMENTS

All Percussion Music is made up of basic patterns

called Rudiments.  There are 40 basic rudiments,

which are like the melody instrument's scales.  First level rudiments include single strokes, double strokes, paradiddle and flams.  If you do each

section in order, (all first level, all second etc.) you can

continue to move ahead on your own.

The more you know , the better percussionist you will be.

Here is a link to all the basic rudiments.
